OUR STORY
Barley's opened at 467 N. High Street in 1992, when craft beer in Columbus was just getting started. Our first two beers were a Pilsner and a Pale Ale, brewed in a small basement brewhouse that's still running today. Both are still on tap.
Our original brewmaster, Scott Francis, came to Barley's after helping launch Columbus Brewing Company, the city's first microbrewery. He brought along a young brewer named Angelo Signorino, who started out helping in that windowless basement. More than 30 years later, Angelo is still here and still brewing every beer we pour.
We've watched downtown grow up around us, from vacant lots to the Arena District, the Short North and everything in between. Through all of it, the formula hasn't changed: brew excellent beer, serve great food, and give people a place to gather.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS
- 1992: Barley's opens with a Pilsner and a Pale Ale.
- 1993: Mayor Greg Lashutka taps our first Christmas Ale at our first anniversary party. Scottish Ale joins the lineup and becomes a house favorite.
- 1996: We install a beer engine and start pouring traditional cask ale.
- 1997: The first Barley's Homebrew Competition.
- 2012: Our 20th anniversary, and our first beer brewed for Origins Game Fair.
- 2017: Our 25th anniversary.
- 2018: Batch #2,000. Batch #2,001 becomes Haze Odyssey, our first hazy IPA and still on tap today.
- 2020: A skeleton crew keeps the brewhouse going for carryout through the shutdown.
- Today: More than 30 years on High Street, with Angelo still at the kettle.
COMMUNITY & CONNECTION
Barley's has always been a place where Columbus shows up. Mayor Greg Lashutka tapped our Christmas Ale three years running. Columbus Crew captain Frankie Hejduk and Jeni Britton Bauer of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams have served as guest tappers, and Ohio State coach Earle Bruce once emceed our anniversary party.
Over the years we've also poured pints for Stephen King, Star Trek's James Doohan and Wil Wheaton, and beer writer Michael Jackson, who wrote about our Scottish Ale. Every year, our Homebrew Competition puts a local brewer's recipe on our taps, and some of those winners, like Blood Thirst Wheat, never left.
