Who is that fair maiden and why is she on our Weizenbock sign?
We don't exactly know who she is, but it's from a painting that resides at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Painted in oil on paper and laid down on canvas in 1868, the artist is Charles Edward Perugini, apprentice to Lord Leighton. The title of the painting is "I know a maiden fair to see, take care". The painting illustrates an old German poem translated by Wadsworth Longfellow. It goes like this:
There you have it. A German poem to go with your German weizenbock. Let's toast to the fair maiden! |
Barley's Weizenbock Style Guidelines: This very strong wheat ale is malty and somewhat fruity. Spicy and floral saaz and Hallertau hops keep this beer from being a malt monster while wheat and Victory malts contribute freshly toasted character. Rotation Schedule: Usually every autumn. Food Pairings: Grilled sausage with peppers and onions or sauerkraut. Tru it with our apple pie or with our foot-long "Junkyard " Dawg" special on Thursdays. |
