Barley's Wheat Ale

About the Ale: An American Wheat is the American craft brewers' spin on German wheat beer (hefewiezen.)

This style takes the Hefeweizen recipe and replaces the distinctive yeast with much cleaner fermenting ale yeasts. This creates a very subtle brew making it a great transition beer for many new good beer drinkers.

It's also a great beer for the intense heat of summer. It goes down easy, and you can have quite a few. In fact, the lazy, hazy straw color of our wheat ale could have been inspired by Nat King Cole's "Those Lazy, Crazy, Hazy Days of Summer." In case you never paid attention to the lyrics, here they are. Summers of yesteryear, summarized in a pint glass...

Peak Billboard position: # 6 in 1963
Words by Charles Tobias and music by Hans Carste

"Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer

Just fill your basket full of sandwiches and weenies
Then lock the house up, now youre set
And on the beach youll see the girls in their bikinis
As cute as ever but they never get em wet

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Youll wish that summer could always be here

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer

Dont hafta tell a girl and fella about a drive-in
Or some romantic moon it seems
Right from the moment that those lovers start arrivin
Youll see more kissin <wolf whistle> in the cars than on the screen

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Youll wish that summer could always be here

Youll wish that summer could always be here
Youll wish that summer could always be here."
